7 Proven ways to eliminate Back Pain and improve posture while sitting

7. Sit with your knees slightly lower than your hips. The base of your seat should be slanted slightly forward. In most chairs, this causes you to slide forward slightly, which pulls your back away from the back rest, eliminating lumbar support. You want a chair with a contoured seat pan that keeps your hips higher than your knees and keeps you in your seat…up against the back rest…where you have proper lumbar support.

6. Avoid leaning forward in you chair. Leaning forward constantly can strain your

lower back. If necessary, change you keyboard, mouse, phone, and/or monitor

arrangement to allow you to sit back in your chair.

5. Incorporate stretching into your day. Stretching even 2 to 3 minutes 3 times a day can significantly reduce Back Pain And soreness from sitting in a chair for long periods of time. There are many excellent stretches that will help, but one we recommend is laying on your back and pulling your knees up towards your chest one at a time, holding for 3-5 seconds.

4. Keep your hips, shoulders, and ears aligned. If your ears are in front of your shoulders when you are seated, you will likely start to feel neck pain. If your shoulders are in front of your hips, you will likely feel the strain on you mid and lower back. Keep your head back, chest forward, and don’t slump. If your work environment (desk, chair, keyboard, etc.) is not conducive to this, see what you can do to change it.

3. When sitting, keep your feet flat on the floor, or on a foot rest. When you are sitting in a chair it is imperative to keep your feet flat. This helps support good posture.

2. The top of your computer monitor should be about level with your eyebrows. Place something under it to raise it if it is too low and adjust your chair height if it is too high. Use a page holder at eye level if you have to copy into the computer so that you are not straining your neck by constantly looking down.
